Do you know what is one of the most common symptoms that sends cat owners into their vet’s office?

It is not eating or poor appetite.

I am sure that many of you have experienced this and can relate to this. If you have not, there is a good chance that at some point you will.

The two most common causes are the cat is sick or the cat is finicky. The problem is that sometimes it can be very difficult to determine if a cat is sick or just finicky.  I will like to give you a few tips so you are better prepared to handle this situation.

Tip #1 . Watch your cat. Look for other signs of illness such as diarrhea, vomiting, lethargy, and lack of playfulness.  If you see any other signs of illness, please see your veterinarian. If there are other issues, it is important that you see your veterinarian as soon as possible.

Tip #2. Encourage your cat to eat. Offer fresh food (of what you are already feeding). Sometimes just offering some fresh food can stimulate a cat’s appetite. Also, topping off the food bowl can encourage some cats to eat. Just the sound of fresh kibble will make some cats come running.

Tip #3 .  Try a different food. Sometimes cats will respond to a different food. Sometimes trying a different dry food, a different canned food or a different type of food (such as a semi-moist or pouch food). One food that some cats adore is Hills Tender Chunks in Gravy. Whatever you feed please, make sure it is good quality food formulated to meet cat’s needs. If you introduce something new, pay close attention to see if your cat eats the new food. If he does not, then I really start to worry.

Make sure you continue to watch your cat closely. If your cat doesn’t eat the new food, acts lethargic, has diarrhea, vomits or has any other problems, please see your veterinarian immediately.
