What Kind of a Dog is That????

What kind of dog is that?

Mixed breed owners are accustomed to getting this question. These owners have a “best guess” answer, but secretly they wonder the true breed composition of their precious dog. It can be fun to imagine what breeds are in a mixed breed’s family tree.

Well, my friends you do not have to imagine anymore.  An innovative company has developed a State-of-the-art DNA-based technology test that can genetically reveal the breed composition of your mixed breed dog. This truly is an exciting advance in technology.

Here is how it works. You receive a soft-bristled brush, which you rub on the inside of your dog’s cheek to collect cells.  You will also receive written cell collection instructions with the test. The swab is simply mailed back to MetaMorphix in a pre-paid envelope, and results will be returned in four to six weeks.

Sounds interesting? There are currently 3 tests available: a Breed test, a Parentage Test and a DNA Identification test.

These tests have actually been featured on the “Today Show” when host, Meredith Vieira tested her mixed breed dog, Jasper. Meredith purchased Jasper from a pet store believing he was an Aussie-Poo, or Australian Shepherd, Poodle mix. After the test, Meredith discovered that Jasper is actually a Collie, Shetland Sheepdog, and Borzoi mix!

For pet owners with a “Heinz 57” dog, truly knowing their canine companion’s history can be very satisfying. Thanks to DNA testing technology, it is now an easier question to answer.

Until next time…

Dr. Jon

P.S. – The DNA test is actually mailed to you. In three to seven days, the test will arrive at your home. Without pain or the help of a veterinary professional, you collect the DNA sample in the comfort of your home.

This is an interesting technology.  Take a few minutes to learn about these DNA tests.
