What Do Cats Do For Fun?

Cat Crazy Newsletter

Cat Owners – What We Do for FUN…

What Do Cat Lovers Do For Fun?

Well, watching their cats play of course.  Cat lovers know that playing with their cat and /or watching their cat play is one of the most entertaining and fun pastimes afforded to them.

A cat’s imagination is boundless. All animal play is spontaneous and whimsical. Animal games are without many rules and mainly just for pleasure, although much of animal play is meaningful, allowing the cat to rehearse and learn life’s lessons. Play has been noted in animals in the wild as well as in pets, and enjoyment seems to be the common theme.

Karen Cummings, one of our Petplace authors has written an excellent article on “How Cats Play“.

A cat’s play takes three forms, though often it is sometimes difficult to separate them.

1. Social Play – Social play is how kittens learn to interact with their littermates, their mother, other cats, other household pets, and you.

2. Object Play – Poking, batting, and tossing around small objects are ways that kittens learn about how to deal with prey. During such play sessions they develop the survival skills that they might need if they ever have to provide for themselves.

3. Locomotor Play – An active cat is a confident cat. The running and jumping of locomotor play helps a kitten increase strength, coordination, and flexibility. Locomotor play also stimulates a cat’s appetite while helping to keep her physically fit.

Karen goes on to explain in more detail the various form of Cat Play. To learn more about how cats play Go to: http://www.petplace.com/cats/how-cats-play/page1.aspx.

Another way we cat lovers have FUN is to watch beautiful pictures of cats. That is why last week over 3,000 people came to Petplace to see our brand NEW collection of 10 amazing cat slideshows including: Cute Kittens, Lazy Cats, Fat Cats, Sleeping Cats and much more.

The pictures are beautiful and they will make you feel good inside.

To see them go to: http://www.petplace.com/cat-pictures.aspx.

We hope that you love them as much as we do!

Well, I hope that you have a great weekend. Remember to make time to play with your cat!

Until next time…

Volunteer Now

Help spread the word about this volunteer opportunity. Forward this message on to friends in the area who might be interested in joining the Wildlife Volunteer Corps.

Defenders is teaming up with Conservation Northwest to make our highways safer for wildlife and to document the presence of rare species — like lynx, wolverines and  grizzlies — in the Cascades.  And you can help!

Get your hands dirty for wildlife: Join our Wildlife Volunteer Corps to be a part of an exciting wildlife monitoring project this spring and summer.

There are plans on the table to expand I-90 between Hyak and Easton, an area that scientists at the U.S. Forest Service have long recognized as a critical wildlife corridor in the Cascades – making the risk of vehicle-wildlife collisions extremely high.

Map of I-90 Expansion Area

This volunteer project is part of a larger effort to protect wildlife from becoming road kill, with volunteers helping to track the presence of wildlife near the freeway as well as rare species in the North Cascades by installing remote cameras and monitoring what has been captured on film each month.

There are two trainings coming up — and if you’re interested in taking part in this project, you must attend one of them to get trained on the equipment and protocols that will be used. *   RSVP to sign up to attend a training.

Camera Training #1 Monday, March 31st, from 6:00-8:00 p.m.
Where: Conservation Northwest’s Fremont Office
Camera Training #2 Wednesday, April 2nd, from 6:00-8:00 p.m.
Where: Conservation Northwest’s Bellingham Office

There are two basic levels of involvement in this project to keep in mind as you think about participating:

1. Each Wildlife Camera Team has a Team Leader who will be responsible for the camera, and for making sure members of the team are assigned to each monthly monitoring trip.

2. Members of the Team should be able to commit to participate in at least two remote camera monitoring visits this spring and summer.

There will be 4 “I-90 Wildlife Camera Teams”, which will involve short day hikes, and 8 “North Cascades Wildlife Camera Teams”, which will likely start later in the spring after snowmelt and may involve overnight trips and more strenuous off-trail hiking.

Space is limited, so RSVP today to attend a wildlife monitoring training and someone from Conservation Northwest will be in touch with you soon with more details.

Thanks for getting your hands dirty to help save Washington’s amazing wildlife!

Sincerely,

Trish White, Director of Habitat & Highways Campaign Trish White
Director, Habitat and Highways Campaign
Defenders of Wildlife

* If you can’t make it to either of the trainings, please RSVP anyway and alternate trainings may be scheduled if there is sufficient demand.
