Cat Radio??

POSTED: 11:44 am MST March 7, 2008
UPDATED: 8:06 am MDT March 9, 2008
PHOENIX — When you leave for work in the morning, do you ever worry your pets will get bored while you’re away?
A Valley man has dedicated a good portion of the past seven years to make sure his cats stay entertained.
Nohl Rosen of catgalaxymedia.com has created an online radio station for cats only.
He said the idea came to him seven years ago when he felt his cat Isis seemed bored. He put in a CD to see if Isis would be
entertained. “The music started, Isis laid down, relaxed, and Cat Galaxy was born,” said Rosen.
Rosen’s studio is based out of his home. He broadcasts to cats every morning and night for two hours each.
He makes sure nothing gets on the air that has not been cat-approved.
“We have to throw away the human way of thinking that everything is meant for humans. Cats, I think, know what they want to hear,” said Rosen.
The station has daily features such as Meow Mixing Monday, Tuesday Night Cat Club, Wednesday Night Cat Attack, Thursday Night Purr Party, and Friday Night Feline Frenzy.
If you are one of the three million people who have visited his Web site over that past seven years, you may have noticed that Rosen has been off the air for the past couple of months.
“We lost our assistant station manager just after New Year’s this year,” said Rosen, referring to his cat, Jade, who passed away. “So, it was a big loss, it hit us hard and we are just now getting back into the groove again,” said Rosen.
He and the rest of his cat staff said they are ready to move on.
Cat Galaxy is celebrating its seventh season. Rosen said he doesn’t make any money and he is just doing it because he loves it.

Iowa Mayor Puts $5 Bounty On Stray Cats

Posted on Thursday, March 13th, 2008 at 4:00 am in News for Cats, Dogs & Owners, National Dog, Cat & Pet Info, Cats.
By Emily Huh
CatsThe mayor of Randolph, Iowa is taking drastic measures to curb the feral cats in the area.

Since March 1, Mayor Vance Trively’s plan of putting a bounty on all stray cats has been in effect. If a resident can lure a cat and catch it, the person will get five dollars.

If a cat or dog does not have a tag or collar on, the animal will kept “for a time for people to claim them”. If they are not claimed, they will be euthanized.

Randolph City Councliman Allen Wendland said, “Either people keep their cats in or like dogs, if they keep ‘em under control we shouldn’t have a problem, it’s just the stray ones and cats propagate quite frequently.”

Several residents, including Chasidy Wederquist, said the bounty plan is ridiculous and that killing the animals is not the right way to deal with the stray cats.

Community members also have gone on the city’s community web site and called the bounty plan inhumane and stated it is dangerous to family pets.

But city officials disagree. Wendland said, “There’s not much of a bounty on ‘em to where people are gonna make a lot of money on it.”

Some animal organizations are worried that people will take pets and take off their collars or tags, so they can get the bounty money.

John Snyder of the Humane Society of the United States said he doesn’t have a problem with humanely killing a feral cat, but said the money spent on the bounty and the vet expenses would be better used on hiring a professional.

Snyder stated, “I’m concerned about children, people trying to capture these cats that don’t have knowledge of what they’re doing, being scratched or injured or inhumanely handling these cats for five bucks. Is it worth it?”

It has been reported that two cats have been already turned in since March 1.

Feral Cats To Be Trapped And Most Likely Euthanized In Chantilly, Virginia

Posted on Thursday, March 13th, 2008 at 3:00 am in News for Cats, Dogs & Owners, National Dog, Cat & Pet Info, Cats.
By Emily Huh
catAn estimated 200 feral cats at a trailer park in Chantilly, VA will be trapped and most likely euthanized starting next week, according to a local animal control officer.

Trailer park residents have been working since 2002 with Alley Cat Allies to control the stray cat population in humane ways. Volunteers have set out food and have been trapping animals to vaccinate and spray or neuter them.

But other residents have been frustrated with the cats and have complained about the damage they have done to their gardens and the mess that they have left.

The Meadows of Chantilly hired a company that will begin trapping the feral cats and taking them to a local animal shelter, where they will probably be put down.

Sgt. Andrew Sanderson of the county police department’s animal services division said that the plan is “definitely moving forward. There is nothing legally holding them back. They have every legal right to trap on their property.”

The management company put up notices: “We have talked to many residents. . . . The vast majority of you are asking us to reduce the feral cat population. It’s important everyone stop feeding both stray and feral cats immediately. We have contracted with a State approved agency who will trap the animals in the same way [Alley Cat Allies] does. The difference is the cats will not be returned to the community and will be put to sleep.”

Several residents are “absolutely sick” over the plan to trap the cats, and Becky Robinson, president of Alley Cat Allies, called the plan “hasty” and “cruel and misguided”.

“As we have tried to explain to the management company, simply removing the cats will only make room for new, unaltered cats to move in and breed prolifically. Within months, the Meadows will find itself with nearly as many cats as it started with,” said Robinson. “Spaying and neutering is the only effective way to manage outdoor cats.”

We learned yesterday that the mayor was holding two cats that were surrendered.
After attempts to work with Mayor Trively proved unfruitful, our legal team spent the morning researching the local laws in Iowa and Freemont County. We quickly learned that the actions of the Mayor were potentially unlawful and took the initiative to alert the authorities.

We took action which resulted in the Iowa State Veterinarian promising to send a letter to the Mayor to alert him that it is unlawful to accept animals from the public without proper authorization from the state and a license to operate a pound. The State Veterinarian requested that he cease and desist with harboring animals given to him by the public.

Alley Cat Allies remained vigilant.

We contacted the Freemont County Sherriff’s office to request an investigation of the conditions in which the two cats were being held. We sought to ensure that the Mayor was in compliance with the state laws pertaining to animal negligence. Mayor Trively told us on Wednesday that one cat had already died in his care. We requested an investigation be done as to the cause of death. Further, we were told that the other cat has been taken from the Mayor’s home and brought to be boarded at a local veterinarian.

We will continue to press for an investigation and we will see to it that justice is served for the cat that died. We will also ensure the care of the boarded cat.

Alley Cat Allies is proud to say that other national organizations have reached out to Randolph, Iowa including Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kenab, Utah. We sent a letter which will be delivered by one of our Feral Friends Network members to the Mayor and the City Council of Randolph tonight at the City Council meeting stating again that we are here to help and further that other organizations have volunteered to help – if they simply end their trap-and-kill program.

With your help, more than 2500 letters have been sent to the city of Randolph, Iowa requesting that they cease their inhumane bounty program. If you haven’t taken action yet, please click here to send a letter now.

Sincerely,
Alley Cat Allies

Cat Crazy Newsletter

I got a funny email yesterday – it was from Betty in Wheeling, West Virginia. Betty emailed and said that she really thought her cat liked junk food and didn’t know what to do.

Betty’s description gave me images of cats eating Snickers Bars, drinking pop and laying on the sofa – in a couch potato veg state.

So…I asked Betty what she meant. Well, her cat prefers canned food to dry food. And semi-moist over dry. And pouches of food to dry. If at all possible her cat tries to avoid dry food so…she was worried that her cat is a junk food kitty.

Well Betty, it really depends what you are feeding. When I think “junk food kitty”, I think of cats eating low quality non-premium foods that are not nutritionally complete.

Any cat eating a good quality food, regardless if it is canned, dry, semi-moist or pouches is okay. Most cats do preferred canned and pouched foods over dry.  There is the rare cat that prefers dry but in general, most cats prefer canned or pouches.

As long as the food is a high quality food – it doesn’t matter which you feed. There is some benefit in feeding canned or pouches in cats with some urinary conditions. These foods contain more water, which can be beneficial in promoting more water intake and urine production in these situations.

And…I have to tell you. Some of these foods look pretty darn good. Hill’s came out with a pouched food called Science Diet® Tender Chunks in Gravy” and I have to admit – it looked very good. It has real fish, chicken or beef and it comes in a convenient pouch.

So, if your cat is eating low quality food  (i.e. junk food), or you are ready to try something new, I recommend that you go the Hill’s website and check it out.

To learn more about this new high quality food Go to: www.hillspet.com.

Thanks Betty for your wonderful e-mail.  I also enjoy hearing from my wonderful Petplace subscribers.

Until next time…

They want to BLOCK this Natural Cancer Killer

A  cheery Thursday to all of you.

First thanks to all of you who replied to my last newsletter-
many of you have been touched by the death of a dog or cat, and
a surprising number has been to Cancer.

I was grateful in that most of the dogs and cats I saw yesterday
were all healthy…puppies and kittens do wonders for your
spirit.

Speaking of Cancer, I was sent a story about a recent ‘new’
Cancer treatment.

The interesting part is HOW a certain BIG drug Company tried to
block the release of this to the public..if they CAN’T profit
from it, then they are NOT interested.

——————————-
It’s all About MO**NEY
——————————-

This says 2 IMPORTANT things.

1. Their FIRST interest is PROFIT- not you or your pet’s welfare.

2. They have NO INTEREST in supporting Natural Remedies..NO PROFIT

Here is the story:

Deep within the Amazon Rainforest grows a tree that could literally
revolutionize what you, your doctor, and the rest of the world thinks
about cancer treatment and chances of survival. The future has never
looked more promising.

Research shows that with extracts from this miraculous tree it now may
be possible to…

-Attack cancer safely and effectively with an all-natural therapy
that does not cause extreme nausea, weight loss
-Protect your immune system and avoid deadly infections
-Feel stronger and healthier throughout the course of the treatment
-Boost your energy and improve your outlook on life

The source of this information is just as stunning: It comes from one
of America’s largest drug manufacturers, the fruit of over 20 laboratory
tests conducted since the 1970’s! What those tests revealed was nothing
short of mind numbing… Extracts from the tree were shown to:

-Effectively target and kill malignant cells in 12 types of cancer,
including colon, breast, prostate, lung and pancreatic cancer.
-The tree compounds proved to be up to 10,000 times stronger in
slowing the growth of cancer cells than Adriamycin, a commonly used
chemotherapeutic drug!
-What’s more, unlike chemotherapy, the compound extracted from the
Graviola tree selectively hunts down and kills only cancer cells.
It does not harm healthy cells!

The amazing anti-cancer properties of the Graviola tree have been
extensively researched–so why haven’t you heard anything about it?
If Graviola extract is as half as promising as it appears to be–why
doesn’t every single oncologist at every major hospital insist on
using it on all his or her patients?

The spine-chilling answer illustrates just how easily our health–
and for many, our very lives(!)–are controlled by money and power.

Graviola–the plant that worked too well

One of America’s biggest billion-dollar drug makers began a search
for a cancer cure and their research centered on Graviola, a
legendary healing tree from the Amazon Rainforest.

Various parts of the Graviola tree–including the bark, leaves,
roots, fruit and fruit-seeds–have been used for centuries by
medicine men and native Indians in South America to treat heart
disease, asthma, liver problems and arthritis. Going on very
little documented scientific evidence, the company poured money
and resources into testing the tree’s anti-cancerous properties–
and were shocked by the results. Graviola proved itself to be a
cancer-killing dynamo.

But that’s where the Graviola story nearly ended.

The company had one huge problem with the Graviola tree–it’s
a wild substance, and so, under federal law, not patentable.
There’s no way to make serious profits from it.

It turns out the drug company invested nearly seven years trying
to synthesize two of the Graviola tree’s most powerful anti-cancer
ingredients. If they could isolate and produce man-made clones of
what makes the Graviola so potent, they’d be able to patent it
and make their money back. Alas, they hit a brick wall. The
original simply could not be replicated. There was no way the
company could protect its profits–or even make back the millions
it poured into research.

As the dream of huge profits evaporated, their testing on Graviola
came to a screeching halt. Even worse, the company shelved the
entire project and chose not to publish the findings of its research!

Luckily, however, there was one scientist from the Graviola research
team whose conscience wouldn’t let him see such atrocity committed.
Risking his career, he contacted a company that’s dedicated to
harvesting medical plants from the Amazon Rainforest and blew the whistle.

Miracle unleashed

When researchers at the Health Sciences Institute were alerted to
the news of Graviola, they began tracking the research done on the
cancer-killing tree. Evidence of the astounding effectiveness of
Graviola–and its shocking cover-up–came in fast and furious…

…The National Cancer Institute performed the first scientific
research in 1976. The results showed that Graviola’s “leaves and
stems were found effective in attacking and destroying malignant
cells.” Inexplicably, the results were published in an internal
report and never released to the public…

…Since 1976, Graviola has proven to be an immensely potent
cancer killer in 20 independent laboratory tests, yet no double-
blind clinical trials–the typical benchmark mainstream doctors
and journals use to judge a treatment’s value–were ever initiated…

…A study published in the Journal of Natural Products, following
a recent study conducted at Catholic University of South Korea
stated that one chemical in Graviola was found to selectively kill
colon cancer cells at “10,000 times the potency of (the commonly
used chemotherapy drug) Adriamycin…”

…The most significant part of the Catholic University of South
Korea report is that Graviola was shown to selectively target the
cancer cells, leaving healthy cells untouched. Unlike chemotherapy,
which indiscriminately targets all actively reproducing cells (such
as stomach and hair cells), causing the often devastating side
effects of nausea and hair loss in cancer patients.

…A study at Purdue University recently found that leaves from
the Graviola tree killed cancer cells among six human cell lines
and were especially effective against prostate, pancreatic and
lung cancers…

Cat Crazy Newsletter

This may not be a pleasant topic but it is real and it has happened to many (if not all) of us.

You get home from work, you open the front door and it hits you!  A bad smell, where is it coming from? Aha, there it is… coming from the litter box, your cat had diarrhea today…

Diarrhea is a relatively common symptom in cats.  So a very common question we get is “what do you do if your cat has diarrhea?”

Diarrhea is defined as frequent loose or runny bowel movements (stools). The stools can vary from watery to pudding like in consistency. The color can fluctuate from light brown, yellow, dark brown, black or bloody tinged. The frequency can range from just a little more than normal to constant straining.  Some indoor cats may have such urgency, they can’t make it to the litterbox in time and have an “accident” outside of the box.

Some cats may have one or two loose stools and it may not be a problem. If a cat has one or two loose stools but is still eating, drinking and seems playful – then I am not very worried.  But it is important to watch for any additional signs.

These are the situations in a cat with diarrhea that may indicate that it may be a sign of something more serious.

We worry about a cat that has any of the following signs in addition to the diarrhea:

  • Won’t eat
  • Vomits
  • Acts weak
  • Has any difficulty breathing
  • Diarrhea continues for more than 12 hours
  • Blood in the bowel movement or the bowel movement looks very black (tarry)
  • Acts lethargic
  • Looks pale (when you look at his gum color)

If you see any of these signs, I would worry that there is an underlying condition that may be significant and need to be evaluated by your veterinarian.

What else can you do?

Keep your cat inside (if he goes out) so that you can observe for any abnormalities. If your cat is not feeling well, he may not be able to defend himself if a problem arises while out.

Think about what he has eaten recently and determine if there has been a diet change. Sudden diet changes can cause diarrhea in some cats. If you are not sure if your cat is eating, offer some fresh food. Make sure he eats. Pay careful attention to his litter box habits. Make sure he is urinating and defecating normally. If you notice abnormalities, then call your veterinarian.

Until next time,

Dr. Jon
